UM - High School Journalism Days

On the 18th of April, four Malta high students in journalism class attended Montana journalism days in Missoula, Montana. On their way to Missoula, the ladies stopped by the Great Falls Tribune to take a tour. Their tour guides were journalists Grady Higgins, Scott Thompson and Enya Spicer, they all explained what part of the paper they tackle and how they come up with their ideas. We also asked them how they overcome the fear of talking to people and sending emails. They stated, “It's always scary at first, but as soon as you get used to it. It's not as bad. Things get easier along the way.” Once we got done talking, they gave us their cards and told us if we ever needed help to contact them, and they would help to the best of their abilities. After the tour, we got back on the road and headed for Missoula.
Montana Journalism Days are hosted so young writers can explore what it is like to be a journalist, broadcaster, or photo editor. The school of journalism puts this program on, and attendees go to different classes during the day on topics such as podcasts, Instagram, fake news, and many more. This year there were more options to choose from. There were two sessions during the day, and in those sessions, there are six workshops. Each course was different and allowed for the opportunity to meet professors from the school of journalism. The first workshop everyone attended was with Professor Dennis Swibold. His workshop was about trying to find out if the news is fake or real. After that workshop, everyone went their separate ways to different workshops they found interesting. Workshop #2 “catch the bad guys and save the world!” was with Prof. Joe Eaton, workshop #3 “the reporting gear in your pocket” with Prof. Ray Fanning and Prof. Jeremy Lurgio. Another option was workshop #4, “in the beginning” with Prof. Jule Banville, and workshop #5 “they aren’t like me” with Prof. Jason Begay. Workshop #6 “only you: telling your story through podcasting” with Prof. Dean Denise Dowling attracted many viewers. All four students went to the 4th workshop “in the beginning” with professor Jule Banville. She talked about how to write your introduction to the article you are writing, the lead. We learned the job of a lead is to hook the reader. Broadcasting has the same rules as writing. After they took those workshops, the college provided lunch for all of the students and staff members.
Once lunch was over everyone headed back to the journalism building. The last of the workshops consisted of workshop #7 “can this hashtag get me suspended?” with Prof. Lee Banville, workshop #8 “stories that saved our planet” with Prof. Nadia White. Other options included workshop #9 “sports photography for the non-sports fan” with Prof. Preston Gannaway, workshop #10 “you do you on youtube” with prof. Kevin Tompkins and Prof. Ray fanning, and workshop #11 “words + pictures+ your creativity = fun with design” with prof. Keith graham. Two students went to workshop #7 with Professor Lee Banville, where he discussed what students can say without getting suspended or what they can’t say without getting into trouble. The other two students went to workshop # 11 with Professor Keith Graham. He talked about how to get people interested in the article with different colors, and what different designs attract people. Sadly the day came to an end and the students went back home. To those who would consider joining journalism, it is a really fun experience, and you learn a lot of helpful things.
